TERRORISTS TOPIC OF TALK: Former U.S. attorney Patrick Fitzgerald will give a talk titled “Ten Myths About Terrorists and How We Fight Them” at 7 p.m. Thursday at Amherst College.

Fitzgerald, a 1982 graduate, will speak in Merrill Science Lecture Hall 2.

Fitzgerald has been fighting terrorism since 1988, when he became the assistant U.S. attorney in New York City. He prosecuted Mafia figure John Gambino, as well as Sheikh Omar Abdel Rahman and 11 others charged in the 1993 World Trade Center bombing.

In his role as the national security coordinator for the Office of the U.S. Attorney, he investigated Osama bin Laden and was chief counsel in prosecutions related to the 1998 U.S. embassy bombings in Kenya and Tanzania.

Fitzgerald was the U.S. attorney for the Northern District of Illinois from 2001 to 2012, convicting two governors of Illinois and leading the investigation into the identity leak of CIA operative Valerie Plame.

He is currently a partner in the Chicago office of the law firm Skadden, Arps, Slate, Meagher & Flom LLP and Affiliates.

ANTIQUES APPRAISAL: The Amherst Historical Society will hold an antiques appraisal day that will help identity items and provide estimated values.

The event is from 4 to 8 p.m. Oct. 20 at the Simeon Strong House, 67 Amity St.

Douglas Kimball of Kimball’s Auction and Estate Services will appraise fine and decorative arts, prints, toys, furniture, Americana, books and folk art.

Participants may bring up to four items and each verbal appraisal will cost $15.

All proceeds will benefit the Amherst Historical Society.
