AMHERST — Amherst College junior Hannah Guzzi scored her eighth goal of the season on Tuesday as the women’s soccer team extending its winning streak to five games.

By scoring seven of her eight goals over the last six games, Guzzi has provided a spark heading into the final four games of the regular season.

Guzzi spent this past summer focused on soccer and improving her game, which saw a drop in production from 10 goals her freshman year to four last season.

“She just came back after the summer and you could just tell she put in so much work,” sophomore midfielder Maeve McNamara said. “If you could believe that she could get faster, she did.”

Getting faster has proven beneficial to Amherst’s offensive because of how Guzzi plays the game from start to finish. She has scored in the first minute of a game twice and is credited with three game-winning goals.

“I like to dribble a lot at players and take people on and look for through balls behind players,” Guzzi said.

The offense has centered around Guzzi’s style of play. Of the 23 goals Amherst has scored this season, nearly one-third have come from the striker.

“Guzzi is a really special player,” Amherst coach Jen Hughes said. “She is so dangerous, she is fast, she takes players (one on one), and she creates so many opportunities for us.”

Hughes described Guzzi as a handful for other teams and said that Guzzi’s dominance opens up the field for other players, which has contributed to the overall success of the team.

Guzzi’s personality is one that is selfless and humble.

“She has that chip on her shoulder but it is a quiet chip, she is very selfless and modest,” McNamara said.

According to Guzzi, her individual success is a direct result of the abilities of the team around her.

“We have been playing really well and I wouldn’t have been able to score any of the goals if I haven’t been getting really good assists on all of them,” Guzzi said.

Amherst (8-2-1, 4-1-1 NESCAC) will look to extend its winning streak against two conference opponents this weekend.

Amherst will host Colby (6-5, 1-5) at noon on Saturday and travel to No. 18 Connecticut College (9-1, 4-1) for a 1 p.m. start on Sunday.

McNamara was confident that Guzzi can continue to lead Amherst’s offense.

“She is so fast and so confident with the ball on her foot,” McNamara said. “There is nobody in the league and nobody out of the league that can guard her with it.”
