EASTHAMPTON — As Police Chief Bruce McMahon gets ready for his retirement on Oct. 27, Mayor Karen L. Cadieux is in the process of appointing a new chief.

According to Jane Sakiewicz, the city’s personnel director, there are three applicants who are from Massachusetts and out of state. The position was posted Oct. 3 and closed Wednesday after being advertised on bulletin boards in city offices and various websites such as Strategic Government Resources.

By next week, Cadieux said she will have an applicant chosen and the appointment scheduled on the City Council agenda for Nov. 2. After the council’s meeting, the applicant will be reviewed through a council appointment subcommittee. The council will vote on the appointment on Nov. 16.

During the hiring process, the mayor will appoint a temporary police chief on Oct. 28. The position is for 30 days and can be appointed a twice if additional time is needed.

McMahon’s retirement will be celebrated with a party on Thursday, Nov. 3, at 6 p.m., at Log Cabin, 500 Easthampton Road, Holyoke. Tickets are $45 and can be purchased through the police department.
