ORANGE — The Frontier Regional football team wanted to show that last week’s loss to Athol was a mere bump in the road.

If this was indeed a statement game, Frontier sure made a big one following a 48-0 triumph over Mahar on a rainy Friday night.

Frontier (5-1, 3-1 Intercounty North) scored on its first three possessions to take Mahar (1-6, 0-4) out of the game early. Good field position helped the Red Hawks along with the strong running of Aaron Landry.

Landry rushed for 245 yards. He eclipsed the 1,000-yard rushing mark before the first half ended.

“It’s so awesome and I owe everything to our line,” Landry said. “I could not have accomplished this without our line.”

Landry ran with machine-like precision. He had touchdown runs of 57, 84 and 31 yards.

The defense, which has long been a Frontier calling card, was impenetrable. The Red Hawks held the Senators to 40 yards of total offense during the first half en route to a 34-0 lead.

The entire second half was played in a driving rain, causing players to lose their footing. Still, the Red Hawks were able to put two touchdowns on the scoreboard.

Frontier played physical, which may have been too much for a young Mahar team to handle. The Red Hawks put tremendous pressure on sophomore quarterback Sam Paul.

“We put our hard hats on and we knew we had to come out strong,” Landry said. “We came out firing.”

It didn’t take long for Frontier to get on the scoreboard. Landry broke loose for a 57-yard touchdown run 15 seconds into the game for a 6-0 lead.

Frontier scored again on its next possession. Miles Freeman hit Seth Gewanter with a 25-yard pass and Gewanter ran in the conversion for a 14-0 edge.

Landry raced 84 yards for another touchdown with 1:44 left in the first quarter for a 20-0 advantage.

The Red Hawks scored four touchdowns after running only 13 plays.

Landry made it 28-0 from 31 yards out at 8:05 of the second quarter.

The Red Hawks weren’t done though.

Steve Worthley capped an eight-play, 31-yard drive with a 13-yard touchdown run that made it 34-0 with 5:01 left to halftime.

Frontier took advantage of a turnover and used Gewanter’s 1-yard touchdown run to take a 40-0 lead at 4:20 of the third quarter.

Worthley closed the scoring with a 5-yard run in the waning seconds of the third quarter.
