Jonny Lazarus dished out two assists, as the UMass hockey team built a three-goal lead in a 3-2 win over Army on Friday at home.

Griff Jeszka opened the scoring 8 minutes, 29 seconds into the first period from Marc Hetnik and Kurt Keats.

Patrick Lee scored with 40 seconds left on the clock in the first from Dominic Trento and Lazarus.

Niko Hildenbrand found the Army net 3:11 into the second period from Trento and Lazarus.

The Black Knights started to storm back in the third period.

They scored two power-play goals in a 1:07 span to pull within 3-2.

Zach Evancho found the net at 3:36 from Ryan Nick and Trevor Fidler, while Clint Carlisle was assisted by C.J. Reuschlein.

UMass (2-1) held strong behind Ryan Wischow, who made 23 saves.

Parker Gahagen played in goal for Army and stopped 22 shots.

The Minutemen won 32 of the game’s 63 faceoffs, led by 17 victories from Steven Iacobellis.

UMass plays on the road for the first time this season in its next game, a Tuesday visit to No. 4 Quinnipiac.

Field hockey

Saint Joseph’s 3, UMass 2 (OT) — Hannah Farrell and Sarah Hawkshaw each scored but the visiting Minutewomen (9-7, 4-2 Atlantic 10) fell to the conference-leading Hawks (12-5, 7-0).

Emily Hazard made seven saves in defeat.

Women’s soccer

Mount Holyoke 2, Elms 0 — McKenna Lamb and Sara Sanau Ruiz scored as the Lyons (8-8) won at home. Amanda Manaster (two saves) and Zoe Marshall (four saves) combined for the shutout.

Rebecca Molin made three saves for the Blazers (13-3-0).

Women’s volleyball

Amherst 3, Bridgewater State 0 — Nicole Gould powered 12 kills, Kate Bres had 19 assists, and Charlotte Duran added 17 assists and eight digs for Amherst (13-6) in its 25-18, 25-18, 25-14 win in its Volleyball Hall of Fame opener at home.

Hamilton 3, Smith 1 — Elizabeth Peay had seven kills and five blocks, while Maca Rojas had 21 assists and Julie Voorhes 18 digs but the Pioneers (3-19) fell 23-25, 25-15, 25-12, 25-10 in their Volleyball Hall of Fame opener at home.
