SOUTHWICK — Zach Kotfila has been South Hadley’s most consistent golfer this season.
He was again Monday at the Western Massachusetts Division 1 Championship at The Ranch Golf Club.
Kotfila may not have qualified for states — no one from Hampshire County did — but he did gain valuable experience that he can take into next season. Kotfila shot an 85 at one of the area’s most challenging courses.
The junior had a 43 on the front nine and a 42 on the back nine as South Hadley finished tied for fifth place with 349 points.
“I think 85 was respectable,” said Kotfila, who was only five strokes shy of qualifying for states.
The blustery conditions didn’t help. Scores were much higher across the board than they likely would have been on an ideal day.
“The wind definitely played havoc on a lot of shots,” South Hadley coach Jim Gawron said. “Even putting was tough.”
But Kotfila didn’t complain. He knew the conditions were the same for everyone and all he wanted to do was compete to the best of his ability.
“The course wasn’t that bad, but the greens were definitely tough and there were a lot of two putts,” he said. “The wind was swirling at most points so it would be coming at you when you were warming up and against you when you were playing.”
Kotfila has been the Tigers’ top golfer this year. His best score was a 72 at The Ledges in South Hadley.
“I’m usually around an 80,” he said. “This was a good experience.”
Gawron was proud of Kotfila.
“That was a good score today,” he said. “Zach improved a lot from last year and it will be good to see what he can do next year.”
Jake Allard and Billy Scott each shot 87 for South Hadley.
Teammate Nick Thibault had an uneven day. After shooting 51 during the front nine, Thibault was on fire on the back nine, shooting a 3-over 39.
Corey Calkins (91) and Jake Remillard (94) played but did not factor into the scoring for South Hadley.
Amherst (403 points) didn’t fare as well. The Hurricanes were led by Anna Casagrande, who shot 94.
Evan Rutherford was right behind Casagrande with a 97. Alex Cantor (107) and Steve McCudden (107) rounded out the top four. Daniel Miller-Grossman (113) and Richard McIntire (122) also played.
Longmeadow won the team title (321 points) and East Longmeadow’s Noah Peterson (76) was the individual champion.
Northampton Trace Whalen competed as an individual and shot a 91.
