AMHERST – Police have arrested two people in connection with an October 15 shooting at Southpoint Apartments in Amherst, according to the Northwestern District Attorney’s office.
Soknang Chham, 33, of New Salem, was arrested Tuesday evening in Flagstaff, Arizona, on a warrant charging him with one count of murder and one count of armed assault with intent to murder.
Soskot Chham, 35, also of New Salem, and beleived to be Soknang Chham’s brother, was also arrested on a warrant with a charge of being an accessory after the fact to murder.
The arrests came after investigators learned the two had left Massachusetts on a bus for Phoenix, according to the Northwestern District Attorney’s office.
Both men will make appearances in an Arizona court to see whether they intend to challenge their extradition back to Massachusetts.
Jose M. Rodriguez, 31, died as the result of multiple gunshot wounds in the October 15 incident. A second male received life-threatening gunshot wounds, but was treated at UMass Medical Center in Worcester and eventually released. The incident remains under investigation by the Amherst Police Department and the Massachusetts State Police Detectives Unit attached to the Northwestern District Attorney’s Office.
A memorial service for Rodriguez was held Tuesday in Hadley.
