CHICOPEE — Two men died in a car crash at late Tuesday night at Westover Air Reserve Base in Chicopee, officials confirmed Wednesday morning.
Technical Sgt. Amelia Leonard of Westover said the two men, who were not affiliated with the base, crashed through the perimeter base and hit a cement barrier around 11:18 p.m. on Tuesday. Leonard said the driver was partially ejected from the car, a Kia Sol, which promptly caught fire.
“The Westover Fire Department responded in less than two minutes, put out the fire and extricated the driver and passneger,” she said. “The assumption is they were going so fast they died on impact.”
Leonard said the barrier has already been repaired and that state police are investigating the fatal crash.
