You remember Music in Deerfield, the non-profit organization that has brought first-rate chamber music to the Pioneer Valley since 1979? Well, in collaboration with the Smith College Music Department over the past decade, it’s presented all its concerts in Smith’s Sweeney Concert Hall, which has created a confusing disconnect between the organization’s name and the actual location of its events. So this year, the MID board decided to re-name the series Valley Classical Concerts, choosing “a simple, descriptive identity that evokes not only geographic reality, but our commitment to the entire region.”
On Sunday, Valley Classical Concerts will host a performance by the Dover String Quartet as the second concert of its 2016-17 season. The program includes Mozart’s String Quartet in F Major, K. 590; “Plan & Elevation (The Grounds of Dumbarton Oaks),” a work by Pulitzer Prize-winning composer Caroline Shaw; and Beethoven’s String Quartet in C Major, Op. 59, No. 3, a piece famous for its blisteringly fast final movement and a crescendo that invariably brings audiences to their feet.
At Sweeney Concert Hall, 3 p.m. $35 general; $10 college students; $5 high school and younger. valleyclassicalconcerts.org
