LENOX — Hopkins Academy boys soccer coach C.J. Holt said he was concerned when he saw how the Western Massachusetts Division 4 Tournament bracket unfolded.

“We knew the road was going to come through Lenox or Monson at some point. They’re the top two seeds for a reason,” said Holt. “They play a tough schedule and get good results with that schedule.

“Every D4 team knows that the road comes through Monson or Lenox. It’s just a matter of when you play them.”

Tuesday night, the second-seeded Millionaires proved to be too much for the No. 7 Golden Hawks, as Lenox opened its tournament play with a 3-0 quarterfinal win Tuesday night.

Luke Murphy’s goal at 33:51 broke the scoreless tie, and it was followed three minutes later by the first of two goals off the foot of Mike Abdalla.

“When I took over this position and we were looking to Western Mass., I knew (Hopkins) had a poor record and they were going into the last game to make Western Mass.,” Lenox coach Camilo Bermudez said. “When the seedings came out, this was the last team that I wanted to play.

“They’re a classic D-4 Pioneer (Valley) team. They’re very athletic and they’re very strong.”

The Millionaires (14-2-3) will face No. 3 Granby (17-2-0) in a semifinal contest on Thursday at South Hadley High School at 5 p.m.

The Rams advanced by beating Mount Everett 4-0.

The Golden Hawks (8-10-2) were outshot 16-6 in the contest, but 11 of those shots came in the first half. For most of the second half, the home side had to play a man down.

Lenox defender Nick Monteleone will sit out Thursday’s semifinal after picking up a pair of yellow cards in the second half.

“We really had to lock it down, get organized, slow the game down and figure out how to work it out the back,” Lenox defender Noah Kalischer-Coggins said. “It was a challenge, but I think we came out doing it well.”

Lenox goalkeeper Matt Tibbetts had four saves to record his eighth shutout of the season. He was especially on top of his game in the second half before the Millionaires really settled in to play a man down. A key moment came on a 40-yard free kick by Hopkins’ Uan O’Brien. He took the kick from the left side toward the back side post, but Tibbetts saw it through a gaggle of players and caught it.

The Millionaires came out quickly and almost put the game away in the first two minutes of the first half. Abdalla had two early shots on goal that were stopped by Golden Hawks goalkeeper Adam Yahman. The second one came off a nifty feed from Monteleone, a shot that forced Yahman to make a diving stop.

Yahman stopped six shots in the first half. His run of stops ended when Murphy scored with six minutes to play in the half.

The Golden Hawks were rocked three minutes later when Abdalla scored on a rebound to make it 2-0.

“They’re used to being in the lead, they’re used to playing with the lead,” said Holt. “I think that goal really kickstarted them. To get out of the half 1-0, I’m really happy. An unfortunate error caused the second goal and now we’re chasing two. So the whole game changes in three minutes.”

Abdalla’s second-half goal in the final five seconds accounted for the 3-0 final.

It was the final game for Hopkins seniors Trevor Fil, Oliver Rodgers, Will Hannum and Brandon Munson.
