ERVING – A bad house fire on Route 2 in the center of town injured three and drew a 13-town response after it was reported about 3 a.m. Tuesday. Injuries were reported to be residents, who made it outside the house before rescuers arrived, but it was unclear at 8 a.m. how bad the injuries were.
The state fire marshal’s office is investigating, but the cause was not immediately known.
The top of the two-story house was blackened with a hole burned through it, although it appeared the fire may have started on the first floor.
Fire officials said they never were able to attack the fire from inside because it was already too intense when they got there.
When state police arrived at 10 W. Main St. about 3 o’clock, they reported a working structure fire. Route 2 was closed off, with traffic detoured north into Northfield between Mountain Street and Church Street, according to police.
Route 2 was reopened by 8 a.m. and some fire crews from mutual aid towns were leaving the scene.
Other details will be reported as they become available.
