WILLIAMSBURG — Police are investigating the appearance of a swastika spray-painted on a large recycling container at the Brassworks building at 132 Main St.
Police Chief Denise Wickland said her department received a call from a tenant of the building and others who reported first seeing the swastika Saturday morning.
“This is the first time that we have seen anything like this here in town,” Wickland said.
She said there are currently no suspects for the vandalism, but noted that police are actively investigating the incident.
The incident in Williamsburg comes on the heels of hateful graffiti discovered on Mount Tom around Nov. 10 when swastikas and hate speech were painted along the mountain’s ridge line.
In a previous Gazette interview, Anti-Defamation League Director Robert Trestan said that there has been an increase in such incidents around the country in the wake of the Nov. 8 presidential election.
