Hunting hawk

Alvord Street, Ledges Golf Course, South Hadley
Photograph and text by Anne E. Ely, South Hadley

I was driving down the road to the Ledges Golf Course off of Alvord Street in South Hadley last month when I saw this red-tailed hawk low in a tree along the road. It was busy hunting and at one point dove down to capture something on the ground. Unfortunately it came up empty-handed โ€” or empty-beaked.

It flew back up to a tree where it paused, back lit by the sun, just long enough for me to create this image with my hand held DSLR camera and a medium length telephoto lens. Scolded by two Carolina wrens, it soon flew off to happier hunting grounds.
