NORTHAMPTON — An Easthampton man was ordered held without bail Friday for allegedly assaulting and throwing a woman across a room.

Devon J. Dias, 24, of 69 Pomeroy St., pleaded not guilty in Northampton District Court to charges of assault and battery on a family or household member, assault and battery with a dangerous weapon, strangulation, destruction of property and two counts of threatening to commit a crime.

A dangerousness hearing will be held Monday where a judge will determine if he is eligible for bail.

A woman walked into the Easthampton Police Station around 5:15 p.m. on Nov. 2 to report the alleged assaults. The woman had several bruises on her body, according to police.

The woman told police that on Oct. 31, she and Dias had been arguing for the past few days. At one point during the argument, Dias told the woman he was going to take a shower and slap her in the face really hard, Officer William Mielke wrote in a police report.

“…Upon saying this to her Devon Dias slapped (her) in the face so hard she got an instant headache and fell to the floor,” Mielke wrote.

Dias apologized for the slap and the two watched a movie. They began to argue again the next day, Nov. 1, when she returned to the home around 5 p.m. As the woman was trying to calm down, Dias grabbed one of her boots and threw it at her, hitting her in the face, according to police.

The woman called a friend for a ride home. After making the call, Dias took the woman’s cellphone, smashed it to the ground and told her to contact her friend via Facebook to cancel the ride or he would kill her, Mielke wrote.

Upon canceling the ride, police said Dias slapped the woman four more times causing her to fall to the floor. When the woman attempted to leave, Dias “grabbed her and picked her whole body up and threw her across the room,” Mielke wrote.

He then pulled her out from underneath a desk she was hiding under and picked her up by the throat until the woman could feel herself starting to pass out, according to court documents.

“Once Devon let her go he told her ‘If you stay with me I’m gonna kill you one of these days your dumb if you do not leave,” Mielke wrote. According to police, the woman was able to leave the home around 11 p.m. after Dias had taken a sleeping pill and fell asleep.
