Weather officials expect about one to two inches of snow Monday morning, which should be gone by the time the sun goes down.
But while it flies, police are urging drivers to use caution.
“Go back to the basics, be patient, give a little extra time,” said State Police Sgt. Gary Hebert of the Northampton Barracks.
Hebert said State Police responded to two minor accidents around 5 a.m. on Interstate 91 in Holyoke that were weather related. At 8 a.m., the traffic was unimpeded in the snow, he said.
Northampton police said they had not received any weather-related traffic calls as of 8 a.m.
On the Massachusetts Turnpike, television reports indicate there have been several accidents in the Palmer area and State Police are urging commuters to give themselves at least 45 extra minutes for their commute.
National Weather Service Meteorologist Bill Simpson said temperatures were likely to rise after the snowfall stops around noon or 1 p.m. The high will be 39, he said.
“We’re going to get warmer and then we’re going to get colder,” he said.
Midweek temperatures will remain below average for this time of year — in the low 40s, Simpson said.
Simpson said there would be some precipitation on Wednesday, as well.
Simpson likewise advised drivers to be cautious.
“The Mass Pike is horrendous this morning,” he said. “One inch is worth 10 because people don’t slow down.
