The Belchertown girls basketball team dominated the second quarter and rolled from there en route to a 61-29 win over Quabbin at home.

The Orioles outscored the Panthers 21-2 in the second quarter and cruised the rest of the way.

Kayla Henry led Belchertown (1-0) with 27 points, six steals and four assists, while Cara McKenzie added 12 points, 13 rebounds, and four blocked shots.

Hopkins Academy 60, Gateway 25 —Suspense was in short supply in Huntington as the Hawks opened a 21-1 lead after the first quarter and were never threatened.

Samantha Jenks led Hopkins (1-0) with 23 points, while Ally Jenks added seven points and eight rebounds. A.J. Mitchell scored 10 points.

Becca Herman led Gateway (0-1) with 11 points.

Boys basketball

St. Joseph 60, Smith Vocational 55 (OT) — Drew Brida scored 20 points and hit a buzzer-beater to send the game to overtime, but the Vikings lost on the road to open their season.

He added seven points and three assists for Smith Vocational (0-1).

Smith Voke led 40-32 after three quarters, but the Crusaders scored 21 points in the fourth quarter to rally.

“I think guys got tired. Our bench isn’t very deep,” Smith Voke coach Akara Holder said. “Passes got sloppy. They crept back in the game.”

Luis Acosta had 16 points for the Vikings with seven rebounds.

Nik Smith broke the Northampton High School 50 meter dash record, covering the distance in 6.56 Friday at Smith College.
