Frontier Regional junior Matt Carlson won the first varsity wrestling tournament he ever competed in, topping the podium at Saturday’s Red Raider Tournament in Athol.
The 285-pounder notched all three victories via second-period pin.
He took down Hampshire’s Tallon Garelli, Northbridge’s Jake Savage and Granby’s Brad Taft en route to the title.
Connor Pettis was second at 126 punds, losing to Naticks’ Jacob Opela in the finals with a pin at 3 minutes.
Pettis beat Athol’s Kendrick Raymond, Mahar’s Justin DeDiege and Monty Tech’s Nikolas Gaulin to reach the final.
Josiah Murray was third at 138 pounds.
He lost to Natick’s ben Steenkamp in the first round before beating Northbridge’s Luke Casey, Taconic’s Sam Miller and Athol’s Joe Gray all via pin to take third.
