Freshman Jake Ross of Northampton hasn’t had a problem scoring for the Springfield College men’s basketball team.

On Wednesday at home, he helped beat the No. 1 team in the nation.

Ross scored 21 points with 10 rebounds in a 71-70 win over Amherst College (8-1).

Johnny McCarthy scored 25 points for Amherst and hit seven 3-pointers.

Ross blocked a shot attempt by McCarthy on the game’s last possession to seal the game for the Pride (4-5).

Women’s basketball

Boston University 64, UMass 60 — A late run by the Terriers put away the Minutewomen in Boston.

Ryan Holder had 16 points for UMass (4-5), while Maggie Mulligan went for eight points and 15 rebounds.

Master’s School 66, MacDuffie School 63 — The Mustangs lost a back-and-forth game at the MassMutual Center.

A halfcourt desperation shot to tie the game missed for MacDuffie.

Ismael Massoud had 24 points and 10 rebounds for MacDuffie.

Massoud went 5-for-8 from 3-point range. Amherst’s John Bella-Hunter added seven points and eight rebounds for the Mustangs (2-6).

Girls basketball

Choate 53, Williston 46 — Sarah Sullivan had 10 points, while Sarah Marion added nine in the loss for the Wildcats.

Hampden Hall 48, MacDuffie School 31 — Jocelyn St. Onge scored 11 points for the Mustangs in a road loss.

Florence Tshimanga contributed nine points for MacDuffie.

Boys squash

Williston 4, Suffield 3; Salisbury 4, Williston 3 — Wiley Jung clinched the Wildcats’ win over Suffield, while Joey Robbins earned his second win of the day in Williston’s loss.
