After cruising through its first four games, the Belchertown girls basketball team struggled in the first half and trailed defending state champion Longmeadow by seven.

But junior Catherine Mastalerz scored all eight of her points in the second half to spark the 55-49 comeback win for the Orioles Tuesday.

Kayla Henry continued her torrid pace with 34 points, five rebounds and three assists for Belchertown (5-0).

Northampton 67, Amherst 30 — The Hurricanes led 11-7 after the first quarter, but that was not an omen but a wake-up call for the Blue Devils.

Northampton outscored its rival 41-10 over the middle two quarters and rolled from there.

Lauraine Joensen led Hamp (3-0) with 22 points, while Amanda Mieczkowski added 12.

Erin Klaes led Amherst (1-3) with 13.

Smith Vocational 45, Pioneer Christian 39 — The Vikings pulled away at the free-throw line in the fourth quarter at home.

Stephanie Start led Smith Voke (2-2) with 20 points while Sydney Cyr added 16.

Shannon Ryan (nine points) led the team with 17 rebounds.

Greenfield 76, Smith Academy 22 — The Falcons struggled on the road against the Green Wave.

Olivia Cavanaugh and Emma Kelly each had eight points.

Mary Whalen scored four points with 10 rebounds for Smith Academy (2-1).

South Hadley 52, East Longmeadow 32 — The Tigers won at home to stay unbeaten (3-0).

Sophie Gatzounas scored 18 points with 12 made free throws.

Mikhaila Edge added 12 points.

Wahconah 44, Frontier 43 — The Red Hawks overcame an early deficit, but fell short in a close game in the Berkshires.

Ella Deane had 11 points and three assists for Frontier (1-1).

Lisa Portier added 10 points, five rebounds and threes assists.

Boys basketball

Hampshire Regional 63, Monument Mountain 47 — The Raiders turned a tight game into a comfortable win in the fourth quarter as they handed the Spartans (1-2) the loss in Westhampton.

Tied at 33, Hampshire (2-2) went on a 16-1 run and led by as much as 22 in the final quarter.

Transition baskets and 26 forced turnovers power the Raiders.

Matt Babyak had 18 points and 12 rebounds, while Greg Laroche added eight points, seven steals and six assists. Jacob Bihler chipped in with nine points and six assists. Nate Sawyer added 11 points in the win.

Lee 48, Smith Academy 30 — Jack Zigmont scored 16 points in a home loss for the Falcons (1-2).

Ice hockey

Minnechaug 4, South Hadley 1 — Jake Remillard made 28 saves for the Tigers (2-2) in a home loss.

Will Hunter scored for South Hadley, with Michael Mazza and Trevor Ouimet assisting.
