Ice Star

North Pleasant Street, Amherst

Photograph and text by Georgette deFriesse, Belchertown

I always try to walk by the University of Massachusetts campus pond on my way to catch the bus home. I was disappointed on this day in late December to see that most of the geese had already flown away for the night. However, as I rounded the north end of the pond, I was delighted by some of the most beautiful ice stars I’ve ever seen. This one reminds me of an illustration of a snowflake.

This image was made with a handheld DSLR using a medium telephoto lens.
