The Northampton boys basketball team established an early lead and its style of play against Putnam Monday.

Then the Blue Devils held on at the free-throw line, beating the Beavers 61-49 in Northampton.

Northampton (6-3) led 15-7 after one quarter and 35-22 at halftime.

“I thought, defensively, we came out and established what we wanted to establish so we could be in control,” Northampton coach Ray Harp said.

The Blue Devils made 30 free throws in the game.

“We were able to get to the foul line in the second half,” Harp said. “They (the Blue Devils) had to defend and outlast them (the Beavers).”

Elijah Davis made eight free throws and led the team with 18 points. Henry Doherty added 16 points and eight free throws.

Andy Grygorcewicz added five points, 13 rebounds and six blocks.

“We tried to establish the offense inside,” Harp said.

Northampton only made one 3-pointer.

It was the Blue Devils’ first win against Putnam since 2010.

Hampshire Regional 58, Southwick 55 — A late run in the fourth quarter gave the Raiders a home win.

Greg Laroche scored a career-high 23 points with five 3-pointers.

Jacob Bihler had 15 points, while Matt Babyak added 14 points.

Bihler led Hampshire (5-2) with six assists.

Hopkins Academy 105, Athol 31 — Sam’i Roe scored 29 points and had 14 rebounds, and the Golden Hawks ran away from Athol.

John Earle scored 19 points and Justin Ciaglo added 16. Jon Morrison also had a double-double for Hopkins (7-0, 5-0 Hampshire) with 15 points and 10 rebounds.

Palmer 73, Easthampton 59 — Zach Crisafulli scored 22 points, but the Eagles lost for the fifth time in six games.

Ant Moynihan (12 points) and Ish Akanour (11) also reached double figures for Easthampton (2-5, 2-1).

South Hadley 61, Agawam 34 — Matt Grochowalski had 22 points and 16 rebounds in a road win.

Calvin Bridges added 21 for the Tigers (5-3, 1-1 Suburban), and Nate Poirier added 12.

Amherst Regional 67, Sci-Tech 58 — The Hurricanes won at home without Meikkel Murray, who sprained his ankle in practice Sunday.

Seth Bella-Hunter scored 14 points with 14 rebounds, while Meikyle Murray added 11 points and eight assists.

Will Budington led Amherst (6-2) with 20 points with four 3-pointers.

Frontier Regional 65, Smith Academy 37 — Ben Lowe scored 18 points with 10 rebounds in a home win for the Red Hawks (2-6, 2-4 Hampshire) over the Falcons.

Matt Bouley (1-7, 0-5) led Smith Academy with 19 points while Brett Gratz added 10.

Granby 67, Renaissance 48 — Zach Gorham’s career-high 27 points and 10 rebounds gave the Rams a win on the road.

Joe Desormier added 13 points with eight assists and five rebounds.

Noah Bleakley chipped in with 10 points for Granby (5-2, 2-1 Bi County).

Longmeadow 80, Belchertown 47 — Mitch Medina scored 18 points, but the Orioles lost on the road.

Nolan Vogel added four 3-pointers and scored 14 points for Belchertown (0-7, 0-2 Suburban).

Girls basketball

Belchertown 62, Taconic 45 — Cara McKenzie scored a career-high 20 points to go along with 17 points and five blocks in a road win.

Kayla Henry scored 30 points for Belchertown (8-1) and is now eight shy of 1,000 in her career.
