NORTHAMPTON — A mother-daughter argument Wednesday turned violent when a 20-year-old allegedly tried to strangle her mother, police said.
Ashley Sherman pleaded not guilty in Northampton District Court on Thursday to charges of assault and battery, strangulation and possession of heroin. She’s due back in court March 16.
Police responded around 9 p.m. to their Paquette Avenue home where the mother, who is also the victim of the alleged assault, told authorities that she wanted her daughter out of the apartment.
The mother told police that Sherman came home “drunk and high,” earlier. When she confronted Sherman, her daughter wrapped her hands around her mother’s throat after accusing the mother of taking something of hers, police said. The mother was able to free herself and call authorities.
After police arrived at the residence, Sherman was screaming from the top of the stairs for them to leave, according to a police report. When officers followed her upstairs to confront her, she had white powder “all over her nose,” police said.
On Sherman’s bed were two packages of heroin, according to the report. She was arrested and booked shortly thereafter. The mother declined transport to the hospital, police said.
