AMHERST — A national search by Amherst College for a new chief communications officer is called off, as Sandra Genelius steps up to take the position.

“We selected Sandy after an extensive national search, through which she emerged as the top choice for this important position,” said Amherst College president Carolyn “Biddy” Martin in a press release.

Genelius will fill the shoes of previous Chief Communications Officer Pete Mackey, who left the position in August. Mackey served as chief communications officer at Amherst College for over two years.

On March 1, Genelius will assume her position as the head of public affairs, marketing, communications and major event programming.

“I couldn’t be more excited to join Amherst’s remarkable community and about the work ahead,” Genelius said in a press release. “I look forward to learning as much as I can about the College and to collaborating closely with faculty, students, staff and alumni to share Amherst’s unique story with audiences around the corner, around the globe and everywhere in between.”

To fulfill her responsibilities at Amherst College, Genelius will draw from more than three decades of experience in past positions as vice president of corporate communications and public affairs at Sony Corp. of America, vice president at CBS News Communications.

Genelius has also worked as director of publicity for CBS for the 1992 and 1994 Olympics and as a strategic communications consultant.
