All senior Isaiah Cardenales does is win for the South Hadley wrestling team.
He picked up career victory No. 100 on Saturday at the Mountie Invitational in Williamstown.
Cardenales pinned Caleb Pollard of Monument Mountain in the championships match at 106 pounds in 36 seconds.
“He was pressuring in a little hard, so I snapped him down to the mat, spun behind, threw in an arm bar and finished it tough,” Cardenales said. “He went over pretty easily.”
Going into the tournament, Cardenales knew he was four wins away from the milestone. He was hoping he didn’t have a first-round bye so he could pick up his 100th win in the final.
“It really drove me to wrestle better,” he said. “It had me hyped.”
The win improved his season record to 29-6 and his career record to 100-19. Cardenales is the two-time defending Western Mass. champion at 106 pounds and placed second at the Division 3 state championships last year.
“My goal this year is to win a state title and to go on to all-states, hopefully make it to New Englands,” he said.
Cardenales reached the milestone in under three full years after not wrestling his freshman season.
“He’s definitely been consistent,” South Hadley coach Kevin McNeil said.
Cardenales is the fifth Tiger wrestler to reach 100 wins in McNeil’s 10 years at the head of the program.
