SOUTH DEERFIELD — Chants of “Red Hawks!” sounded early and often Monday night as the Frontier Regional girl’s basketball team pounded Easthampton, 45-15.

Junior guard Ella Deane led the Red Hawks with 11 points, while senior center Helena Diaz added 10, including six of her eight free-throw attempts.

Senior guard Andie Hall had seven points for Easthampton. Fellow guard and classmate Karina Volpe added five.

“I thought we played some pretty solid defense at times,” Frontier coach Marty Sanderson said. “We were also able to put the ball in the basket a little more consistently than we have so far this year.”

The Red Hawks (5-7, 2-0 Franklin North) host Hopkins Academy (8-5, 1-1) at 7:30 p.m. Tuesday in a key conference game.

The Eagles (5-7, 0-3) have lost six straight, but coach Michelle Dailey was pleased with her team’s effort.

“I’m absolutely happy where we are at 5-7,” said Dailey. “Our girls work very, very hard, we don’t have one superstar on our team so we always play as a team and play hard. Right where we are is where we should be right now.”

Frontier’s enthusiastic fan section got going early. Aggressive half-court defense to go with a full-court press disrupted Easthampton as the Red Hawks led 12-0 after one quarter.

A minute into the second quarter, Easthampton got on the board with a Karina Volpe free throw. Her second attempt missed, but she grabbed the rebound and laid it back in to make it 12-3. It was the closest Easthampton got all night. The Red Hawks ripped off 11 straight points heading into halftime with a 23-3 lead.

The second half saw more open shots for the Eagles, paired with a more laid-back Red Hawk defense. Still, few shots fell for the visitors, who finished with only five field goals.

Personal fouls hurt Easthampton as the Red Hawks made 18 free throws off 20 fouls.

“We don’t doubt the heart of this team, but it’s the little things that we tend not to focus on,” said Dailey. “That hurts us.”

Frontier’s 18 free throws on 25 attempts were the backbone of its offense. Ballhandlers were able to draw defenders out of position, forcing contact and getting to the line. Good positioning and off-ball movement put the Red Hawks in position to score all night.

“We’re a work in progress, so I think we have to build on this win,” said Sanderson. “We got a huge game tomorrow with Hopkins, so if we can win that we’ll be 3-0 (in conference) and we’d go into Mahar tied for first place.

“The key word there is that we’re progressing,” added Sanderson.

Easthampton is back in action Wednesday when it travels to Springfield to take on Sci-Tech (9-3).
