DEERFIELD — A Greenfield man is facing drug possession charges after state police found 240 bags of heroin in his car during a traffic stop on Interstate 91.
Joseph Atherton, 22, of Greenfield, was arrested last week on charges of possession to distribute a Class A drug (heroin) and motor vehicle violations.
Heroin possession charges have also been filed the vehicle’s 27-year-old passenger, an unidentified Belchertown man. State police said only one person was arrested.
According to a statement posted on the department’s Facebook page Tuesday, the drugs were found after “Trooper Daniel Paras of the Shelburne Falls Barracks, stopped a Toyota Yaris on I-91 in Deerfield for motor vehicle violations.”
The post continues, “after discussion with the vehicle occupants, and subsequent investigation, over 240 wax bags of suspected heroin were located.”
State police noted that Atherton was arraigned in Greenfield District Court.
