Friday’s high schools: Hampshire boys basketball closes in on tournament berth

The Hampshire Regional defense shut down Renaissance and moved within a win of qualifying for the postseason with a 73-33 win in Westhampton, Friday.

The Raiders forced 37 turnovers in the win.

David Helems led Hampshire (9-5, 6-3 Bi-County) with 15 points. Tim Krasun pitched in 12 points and Matt Babyak added 11.

Easthampton 75, Ware 52 — Ant Moynihan hit seven 3-pointers and scored a career-high 30 points in a road win.

Zach Crisafulli added 26 for the Eagles (8-6, 8-2 Bi-County), who won their fifth game in a row.

Longmeadow 86, Belchertown 60 — Mitch Medina scored 27 points in a home loss.

The Orioles (0-14, 0-9 Suburban) made 26 free throws.

Frontier Regional 69, Athol 34 — A strong start marked by a 33-point lead at halftime powered the Red Hawks to a convincing 69-34 home win over Athol.

Brandyn Robinson led the Red Hawks with a game-high 11 points.

Granby 50, Southwick 48 — Zach Gorham led a fourth-quarter comeback, scoring 19 points in a road win.

The Rams (9-6, 5-5 Bi-County) trailed by two at the start of the fourth but outscored Southwick 13-9 in the final frame.

Noah Bleakley added 16 points for Granby.

Turners Falls 77, Smith Academy 49 — Nick Leary scored 17 points in a road loss.

Hunter Zygmont added 11 points, and Jack Zigmont scored 11 for the Falcons (1-12, 0-11 Hampshire).

Matt Bouley chipped in 10.

Agawam 58, South Hadley 52 — Depsite 19 points from Nate Poirier and 17 from Calvin Bridges, the Tigers fell at home.

South Hadley dropped to 7-8 (3-6 Suburban).

Girls basketball

Northampton 44, West Springfield 34 — Lauraine Joensen had 20 points and 16 rebounds as the Blue Devils (12-3, 2-1 Valley League) capped a busy week with a win at home.

Hamp lost to Central on Monday and beat Holyoke on Thursday.

Emma Tanner added 11 points and seven steals, Megan McCarthy had 10 points and Amanda Mieczkowski had six assists.

Chicopee Comp 53, Granby 41 — Freshman Nora Young had 16 points, 12 rebounds and seven blocked shots and was a bright spot in the loss for the Rams at home.

Mallory Beauregard added 12 points for Granby (7-8) which needs to win at least three of its final five games to secure a spot in the postseason.
