Tuesday’s high schools: Stephanie Start closes out Smith Vocational girls basketball career, signs with Springfield Technical Community College

Senior Stephanie Start scored 13 points in her final game for the Smith Vocational girls basketball team.

The Vikings lost to Commerce 46-27 on Tuesday at home.

After the game, Start signed her letter of intent to play collegiate basketball at Springfield Technical Community College.

Looking back on her four years at Smith Voke, Start had plenty of people to thank.

“I really appreciate the coaches that I have had here,” she said. “I also have to thank my teammates for always supporting me and having my back through anything,”

Start will play the sport she cherishes at the next level.

“I am looking forward to continue my career with basketball because it is something that I love,” she said.

Frontier Regional 44, Ware 41 — Lisa Portier had nine points and 12 rebounds in the Red Hawks’ close victory over Ware.

Helena Diaz also had nine points and seven rebounds in the win.

Pope Francis 37, Smith Academy 35 — Karlie Guimond dropped 10 points to finish Smith Academy’s season.

Eighth-grader Emma Kelley grabbed 19 rebounds, followed by Hannah Rickert with 10 boards.

Senior Olivia Cavanaugh played her final game for Smith Academy (6-14, 1-7 Franklin South).

Boys basketball

Smith Academy 57, Gateway Regional 33 — After an even first, quarter the Falcons outscored the Gators by 13 in the second quarter on the way to victory in the Falcons Winter Classic.

Matt Bouley led Smith Academy with 16 points.

Jack Zigmont scored 15 and added nine rebounds and six assists for the Red Hawks, finishing just shy of a double-double.

Northampton 73, Chicopee 57 — Michael McCarthy led Hamp with 17 points and added 11 rebounds for a double-double.

Northampton closed out the third quarter with a 12-4 run before outscoring Chicopee 23-13 in the final frame in the Blue Devils’ final game of the regular season.

Henry Doherty (15) and Elijah Davis (15) also reached double figures in points for the Blue Devils.

Frontier Regional 62, Greenfield 61 (OT) — The Red Hawks (9-11) closed their season with an overtime win over the Green Wave.

Ben Lowe led Frontier with 17 points, while Carsten Carey scored 14.

It was the last game for Frontier seniors Myles Freeman, Keaton Warren, Lowe, Trevor Gilmore, Luke Parsons, Ryan Olmstead and Kyle Spencer.

Ludlow 63, Belchertown 49 — Mitch Medina dropped 17 points for the Orioles (0-19) in a road loss to the Lions.

Hopkins Academy 74, Pioneer 59 — John Earle hit four 3-pointers and scored a career-high 28 points for the Golden Hawks.

Jon Morrison added 20 points, and Sam’i Roe had 19.

The Golden Hawks (18-2, 15-1 Hampshire) ended the regular season winning 11 of 12 games.

Indoor track

Amherst Regional junior Aiden Foucault Etheridge placed third in the 800-meter run in 1 minute, 56.1 seconds at the USATF New England Championships, held Sunday at Harvard.

The field was open to all competitors. Myles Marshall of Harvard won in a meet record 1:49.29. Connor Reck of Boston Athletic Association was second in 1:52.64.

Ice hockey

Chicopee Comp 4, Belchertown 3 — A three-goal second period was not enough for Belchertown (9-7-2) in a loss to Chicopee Comp in the Orioles’ final game of the regular season.

Vaughn Gillen tallied a goal and an assist, while Zachary Reidy and Adam Mattingly added the other two goals.

Kyle Greene added 19 saves.
