Pitcher Candace Denis took the loss with six innings pitched allowing three earned runs on four hits with five walks and nine strikeouts, but helped her own cause by going 2-for-3 at the plate with a run scored. St. Francis designated hitter Adrian Smith drove in the winning runs with an RBI double in the bottom of the third inning.
Baylor University shut out UMass in Friday’s later game, 8-0. Pitcher Meg Colleran was hit hard in the loss. She allowed six earned runs on 10 hits and two walks with one strikeout.
UMass batters mustered just eight total hits between Friday’s two games. The Baylor Invitiational will continue throughout the weekend.
