FLORENCE — In the midst of uncertain times for refugees, the Catholic Charities Refugee Resettlement Program will hold a dance event to raise funds for local refugee resettlement.
The event is scheduled for Sunday, from 5 – 9 p.m. at the Veterans of Foreign Wars, 18 Meadow St.
Funds raised at the event will be used to help get local refugees on their feet. The group hopes to use the funds to help refugees pay rent and start businesses, as well as provide necessities such as schoolbooks, baby strollers and bus passes.
“When we say we are a solidarity and a sanctuary community, we really mean it,” said Deborah Cohen, chair of the fundraising committee. Cohen explained that the fundraiser is a good way to show that commitment.
The resettlement program has already received many beneficial donations, especially from local businesses. For example, sewing machines were donated to a group of women from Burundi who are trying to start a sewing business.
The goal amount for the fundraiser is $6,000. Over the next year, Catholic Charities will attempt to raise $102,000 to meet the needs of incoming refugee families.
At the fundraiser, several refugees will speak about their experiences and the help they have received from the resettlement program.
“We all need to come together, no matter who you are,” Cohen said.
Attendees of the fundraiser will be able to tap their toes to local band Blue Rendezvous and participate in a beginner swing dance lesson. Food donated by local restaurants and cafes will be sold. A silent auction will feature work from local artists, gift certificates from businesses, private dance lessons and more.
The public, of all ages, is welcome at the event. There is a suggested donation of $5 to $50.
