Nik Smith finished the boys 300-meter dash with his head in a trash can.
The Northampton senior crossed the line in 34.5 seconds to win the title at the All-State championships Saturday in Boston.
Mulling around after the race, he needed to throw up.

“I ran really fast,” Smith said. “That constitutes some repercussions.”
It was the first time he’d ran under 35 seconds all season.

“When the situation arises and he has the opportunity to do something big, he’s going to turn his mind off and just do it,” Northampton coach Brandon Palmer said.
Smith also took second in the boys 55-meter dash in 6.46 seconds, just losing out to Milton’s Smith Charles, who won in 6.44.
“I’ve never been quite the quick accelerator,” Smith said. “I’m glad I’ve been able to build up my quickness and starting ability in the 55.”
Northampton’s girls 4×800-meter relay team finished ninth and set a school record in 9:49.13.
Amherst’s Sophia Jacobs-Townsley took third in the girls two-mile at 10 minutes, 57.46 seconds. She was 1.12 seconds behind first and .28 seconds behind second.
Aiden Foucault Etheridge finished sixth in the 600-meter run for Amherst in 1:21.15. The Hurricanes’ 4×800-meter team also was sixth at 8:06.03.
South Hadley’s Sarah Fudger broke her own school record in the 600-meter run, finishing ninth in 1:38.53.
