NORTHAMPTON — A 94-year-old man drove into a downtown building off Center Street at about 1:30 p.m. Tuesday, according to the Northampton Police Department.

Northampton police said the man’s foot slipped off the brake pedal of his Buick Regal and hit the accelerator while he was attempting to park in the lot behind State Street Fruit Store. The sedan traveled over a sidewalk and crashed into an office building at 70 Center St.

No one was injured and the driver was the only occupant in the vehicle.

Cory Laflam, of Northampton, was eating lunch in the parking lot across the street when he heard the accident.

“It sounded like someone was rear-ended,” he said.

Northampton firefighters and police responded to the scene. The car appeared to hit a hollow area of the building under its front steps. The vehicle was towed from the scene.
