NORTHAMPTON — So far, a grand jury has indicted two suspects in connection to a violent home invasion in Amherst last fall, in which a group of men donning weapons and tactical gear allegedly ransacked a home in pursuit of valuables and drugs.

One of the accused men, Stephanos Georgiadis, 25, of Hadley, now faces additional charges compared to when he was first arraigned in a district court Feb. 3, when he pleaded not guilty to armed robbery and assault and battery with a dangerous weapon.

Patrick Bemben, 25, formerly of Hadley; Georgiadis; and at least one other person, John Joseph Niemiec III, 29, of Sunderland, allegedly fled into a wooded area behind the residence near South East Street after making off with numerous items typically used in marijuana production, police said.

Following the foot pursuit, prosecutors said, Bemben was reportedly in possession of goggles, a headlamp, a tactical bulletproof vest, a hatchet, pepper spray, various knives and a baton.

Bemben was released on $35,000 cash bail and is receiving treatment at the Recovery Center of Americas in Westminster, while Niemiec has pleaded not guilty to related charges in Eastern Hampshire District Court.

Georgiadis’ attorney, Marissa Elkins, told a judge then that the only reason this case was being brought against Georgiadis was because he cooperated with police. In fact, she said, he talked to police twice. At first, prosecutors say, Georgiadis told authorities he’d only helped plan the robbery, not perpetrate it. But in a second interview, he reportedly said he had, indeed, entered the South East Street home.

A grand jury on Monday handed up the following charges against Georgiadis: conspiracy to commit home invasion, conspiracy to commit armed and masked robbery, assault and battery, assault and battery with a dangerous weapon, aggravated assault and battery with a dangerous weapon, three counts of armed and masked robbery, breaking and entering in the nighttime and larceny from a building.

A judge previously set bail for Georgiadis at $10,000 with conditions, if he is released, that he not leave the state, that he live with his mother in Hadley, and remain drug and alcohol-free.

Georgiadis’ arraignment date has not yet been set, court staff said.
