Sculptor Harriet Diamond’s exhibit on Syrian refugees, “Driven From Their Homes,” is just one part of what a Northampton group is calling “A Month of Witness and Action for Syria.”
The Valley Syrian Relief Committee, formed in 2013 to raise money for victims of Syria’s brutal civil war, has scheduled a number of events this month to raise awareness of the ongoing violence. In fact, the war began in March 2011, said committee cofounder Sara Weinberger of Northampton.
“There’s been a lot of attention in the last few months focused on the election and the new administration,” said Weinberger, referring to President Donald Trump. “But in Syria the violence is continuing … we want to bring attention back to that.”
On March 12 at 2 p.m., the group will sponsor two events at the Lander Grinspoon Academy in Northampton. “Letters of Hope,” a program run in conjunction with a Washington, D.C. organization, invites parents and children to write letters and make drawings that will be sent to people in Syria, including in refugee camps.
“It’s a way of reaching out to people who feel the world has forgotten them,” said Weinberger.
Also at the academy, Belchertown clothing maker Andrea Boyko will demonstrate how she makes “muck shoes” from old bicycle inner tubes and other recycled materials to donate to Syrian children; attendees will be able to help her make shoes on site.
In addition, the “Letters of Hope” event will also take place March 13 at 6 p.m. at the Islamic Society of Western Mass., 377 Amostown Rd., West Springfield. Contact M. Saleem Bajwa (413) 788- 7546 for additional information.
And March 20 at 7 p.m., the documentary “White Helmets,” on humanitarian work done by members of the Syrian Civil Defense forces, will be screened at Greenfield’s Second Congregational Church.
Finally, a panel discussion March 26 at Northampton’s Edwards Church will assess the war, future relief efforts for refugees, and the possibility of holding Syrian President Bashar al-Assad accountable for war crimes. Panelists will include Stephen Rapp, former U.S. ambassador-at-large for war crimes and a Syrian specialist.
