Narcan, opioid overdose training rescheduled

A workshop on identifying opioid overdose and the use of Narcan will be offered in South Hadley Thursday at 5 p.m. as part of the โ€œSaving Lives in Hampshire Countyโ€ series. The series is sponsored by Hampshire HOPE, the countyโ€™s opioid response coalition operated though the city of Northamptonโ€™s Health Department, the Northwestern District Attorneyโ€™s Office, Tapestry and the Quaboag Hills Community Coalition.

The session, which has been rescheduled from an early date, will be held in the select board meeting room in the South Hadley Town Hall, 116 Main St.

The workshop will teach participants what an opioid overdose is, how to recognize and respond to it as well as how to administer the life-saving overdose reversal drug Naloxone, commonly referred to by the brand name Narcan.

Caregivers seminar Saturday

There will be a free seminar for caregivers on Saturday at 11 a.m. at Linda Manor, 345 Haydenville Road in Leeds.

A light lunch will be served..

Geriatric social worker Liz Kapitulik will discuss common challenges families face when caring for a loved one, as well as available options and strategies for choosing the best solution for a given situation.

Annual run benefits the cancer society

The annual Purple Run to fight for a cure for cancer takes place April 23 at 10 a.m. at Look Memorial Park in Florence with pre-registration at 9 a.m.

The event offers a walk and 5K and 10K run components. There will also be a bake sale and craft fair with over 30 vendors at the event.

Proceeds will go directly to the American Cancer Societyโ€™s Relay For Life of Hampshire County in June.

The run was started in 2012 and has raised over $5,000 for the American Cancer Society. The goal for 2017 is to have 500 runners and walkers take part. Organizers are also looking for sponsors and volunteers to assist.

Session on coming-of-age issues for disabled set

Attorney Frederick M. Misilo, Jr will lead a training on guardianship, alternatives to guardianship and other coming-of-age issues for individuals with intellectual and developmental disabilities March 29. It will take place from 6 to 8 p.m. at The United Arc offfice, 294 Avenue A, Turners Falls.

Misiloโ€™s talk will cover options and tell parents how to evaluate the support their children may need as they enter adulthood.

Misilo concentrates his practice in special needs planning, elder law, trust and estate administration and service advocacy.

He is a member of the National Academy of Elder Law Attorneys and a charter member of the Academy of Special Needs Planners. He has worked in community-based services for individuals with intellectual and developmental disabilities. He is also a vice president of The Arc of The United States, Inc., and chair of The Arcโ€™s Public Policy and Positions Committee.
