NORTHAMPTON — An Easthampton man charged in what police described as a bloody assault against his estranged wife’s boyfriend will answer to the allegations in Hampshire Superior Court after a grand jury handed up charges in late February.
Abdelaziz Afoulous, 33, is charged with home invasion, armed burglary, assault and battery with a dangerous weapon, assault and battery on a family or household member and two counts of assault with a dangerous weapon. His Superior Court arraignment is set for March 17.
On Jan. 15, police responded to the home of Afoulous’ estranged wife, on Kenneth Road. There, authorities said, they walked into what appeared to be the scene of a violent altercation, with blood on the kitchen and living room floors. The man police say was assaulted had multiple lacerations to the face and head and was taken to Cooley Dickinson Hospital.
Police said Afoulous retrieved a knife from the kitchen when he entered the house and went to the basement, where he found his estranged wife in bed with a man she described as her boyfriend. The woman used a cover from a pot as protection, according to a police report.
The man in bed tried to retreat by heading for the stairs, but Afoulous wrestled the man to the ground when he reached the kitchen area, kicking him multiple times in the stomach and head, police said. The blows caused the man to lose consciousness and convulse. Authorities found him in a bathroom when they arrived.
Afoulous denied the assault to police. He said he’d shown up at the residence to check on his young son, who was reportedly sick at the time, around 4:40 a.m. The young boy witnessed parts of the alleged assault, authorities said.
In an email Tuesday, Afoulous’ defense attorney, Jesse Adams, said his client “is a hard-working naturalized American citizen who has devoted his professional career to helping people with disabilities. The defense team will review the accusations against him very carefully.”
Previously, Afoulous pleaded not guilty in Northampton District Court to charges of assault to kill, two counts of assault and battery with a dangerous weapon, assault and battery on a family or household member, assault with a dangerous weapon and assault and battery.
