To mark the 58th anniversary of the Tibetan National Uprising, members of the Tibetan Community of Western Massachusetts will march from the Amherst Town Common to Northampton City Hall on Friday.

Thondup Tsering, an Amherst resident, told the Amherst Select Board Monday that each March 10 is one in which local Tibetans show solidarity through walks, rallies and demonstrations that raise awareness of the human rights issues in the Chinese-occupied Tibet.

The march will begin at 10:30 a.m.

As part of Tibet Day, the Select Board issued a proclamation to recognize pleas for justice, to remember the 1 million Tibetans who have died in struggle for independence of Tibet, and to remember โ€œthe occupation and ongong suppression of human rights and freedom in Tibet.โ€

The initial uprising in 1959 saw Tibetans gathered on the streets of Lhasa to protest Chinaโ€™s invasion and occupation.

Amherst will also fly the Tibetan national flag from Friday through March 17, below the United Nations flag on the flagpole front of Town Hall.
