AMHERST — Even with continuing efforts to make Townehouse Apartments in North Amherst less attractive for large gatherings, a loud party there early Sunday morning led to charges being brought against three college-age people, according to Amherst Police.

At 1:41 a.m. Sunday, officers responded to the 50 Meadow St. apartment complex for loud music and screaming coming from one of the apartmentss, said Detective Gregory Wise.

The tenants and their guests were uncooperative in breaking up the party, including refusing to open the door for officers.

The three men who live at the apartment, ages 19 and 20, are being summoned to court on charges of violating the town’s noise bylaw, and each could be responsible for $300 in fines, Wise said.

Townehouse has been the site of recent crime prevention through environmental design techniques that has included installation of a new fence designed to limit the grassy quad areas from being the scenes of major parties.

A short time later, at 1:52 a.m. Sunday, officers observed a man banging on the hood of a stopped vehicle on Triangle Street. The man then tried to get into the vehicle before it sped off.

Jordan E. Ortiz, 21, of Marshfield, was arrested on a charge of disorderly conduct, Wise said.

At 12:47 a.m. Saturday, police spent time clearing 100 people from a home at 286 Belchertown Road, and at 11:47 p.m. officers ended a party at 1008 North Pleasant St.

Amherst Police also assisted Amherst College police with numerous pedestrians on Snell Street returning to campus from an off-campus party at 12:38 a.m. Sunday, and at 12:40 a.m. Sunday officers responded to 240 Northampton Road when a party got out of control and the tenants and called for help to break it up.
