AMHERST — B.J. Roche, a University of Massachusetts Amherst journalism professor, earned the New England Journalism Educator of the Year Award from the New England Newspaper & Press Association, officials announced Wednesday.

Roche teaches newswriting, feature writing, writing for the web and public policy in the UMass Journalism Department and works as the western Massachusetts correspondent for The Boston Globe, according to her university profile.

She also was the former author of the Peaks and Valleys column for the Sunday Globe, and freelances for other publications.

Roche graduated in 1978 from the university.
