Snipes

Route 10, Southampton

Deb Guiel, South Hadley,

To take someone out on a “snipe hunt” is to prank them into trying to catch something that doesn’t exist. Well, there was no fooling on April Fool’s Day when I found these birds….snipes really do exist! I saw these highly camouflaged Wilson’s snipes by chance in Southampton April 1 after the storm. Scanning a wet, muddy field with my telephoto lens, I was quite surprised to see these birds among a flock of robins. They are very alert birds, and didn’t stay long after I noticed them. Luckily I was able to capture a couple of images before they flew off to a different muddy spot in the field.
