GRANBY — After a disappointing loss Tuesday to Brattleboro Union, the Belchertown boys lacrosse team bounced back Friday by defeating Granby, 12-5.

Ray Langevin got the Orioles (3-4, 3-1 Suburban) on the board first, 36 seconds into the game. Aaron Almeda tallied a goal followed by Jaxon Royal at 10:11 for a 3-0 lead.

The Orioles opened the scoring in the second quarter with a goal by Nick Makkiya. Granby (3-5, 2-2 Suburban) tallied its first goal at 5:20 from Collin Stearns, followed by one from Doug Labbee at 8:36 to cut the deficit to 4-2.

Granby’s sudden offensive pressure forced Belchertown coach Patrick Nee to call timeout 33 seconds later. Both teams exchanged goals as Belchertown took a 5-3 lead into halftime.

“Going into the second half, we kind of got motivated (offensively),” Granby coach Joe Denette said. “Defense and Brad (Taft) keeps them motivated.”

The Rams’ optimistic attitude did not translate as the Orioles pulled away. Langevin came out quick again, scoring his second goal 18 seconds from the start. Grant Irving and Ben Laliberte each scored to give Belchertown an early 8-3 lead.

Granby had an extra-man opportunity after Adam Wordworth was penalized for slashing. Drew Weisel tallied a goal with the extra man at 8:40. But Belchertown goalie Aiden Lyons made six of his game-high nine saves in the third, which ended with Belchertown ahead 8-4.

Langevin (assist) scored his third goal in the fourth quarter, followed by Royal’s second goal. Granby responded with Weisel’s second goal, bringing the score to 10-5.

“It’s a team effort, but you got to do what you got to do to win games,” Langevin said. “I thought we played well today and a big game today. We really needed it.”

Wordsworth (four assists) and Nate Pacheco closed off the scoring for Belchertown.

“(We) had good field balance today and they were working the ball well,” Nee said. “We weren’t picking up the ground balls, but, we were able to penetrate in the crease. What really worked for us was (Granby) was collapsing on our cuts in the middle. So we were cutting two down from the top, two middies, and that was leaving one at the top.”

With 41 seconds left in the game, Taft had a huge hit on a Belchertown player, which resulted in a scrum between the two teams in front of Granby’s net. Nee was forced to intervene to break up the altercation. Tanner Imelio and Taft were penalized for unnecessary roughness.

“Well, that’s frustration on our part when we know we needed a win and we’re down 10-4 and their chippy mouths were going at it,” Denette said. “Two of the kids that play for Belchertown are Granby kids and he was the one that took the hit. And so you have to wonder how much is going on in there.”

Belchertown was able to score goals while keeping its defense in check. Players were hitting well and covering the field, Nee said.

“And then I got the gigantic freshman Landen Pease who’s about 6 feet, 2 inches, 250 pounds,” Nee said. “He was able to push some people around. He’s a big fella.”

Size and a lack of experience has hurt Granby this season, Denette said.

“I just think we let it get away from us at the end,” Denette said. “I thought we played pretty tight. We needed a score on our man-ups and we didn’t. You just have to take advantage of that man-up.”

First-year goalie Ryan Walz made seven saves for the Rams.

Belchertown is looking for consistency in its game.

“We got to get our movement down and get the team playing a little better,” Langevin said. “Individual effort has been a little bit too much this year. We definitely needed to get plays going and I think we’ll be all set.”
