EASTHAMPTON — Police investigated a possible gun threat at Easthampton High School after a comment was made on a Facebook page Wednesday.
Authorities investigated Wednesday night and returned to school for the arrival of students on Thursday. Police Chief Robert Alberti said no gun was found.
“The school day went as normally planned,” Alberti said. “There no disruption.”
However, four officers remained at the school throughout the day to ensure the students are “safe and secure,” Alberti said.
“Someone’s going to bring a gun to school,” the anonymous Facebook comment stated under a post by a Northampton resident regarding the school.
At about 6:10 p.m. Wednesday, school Principal Kevin Burke notified police, who immediately started an investigation and alerted the Northwestern district attorney’s office.
Alberti said Officer Rick Rogalski went to the school Wednesday evening to investigate.
Police say the account associated with the comment appears to have a fictitious name and the Northampton resident’s privacy settings have not been limited – allowing anyone to post on the page. Alberti said officers are working to identify the person who posted the comment.
Alberti said the poster could possibly be charged with threat to commit a crime, but other charges would depend on the intent on the posting and disruption caused.
Alberti said an officer will be present at the school until the last day of class on June 26.
Police say they will have additional information when it becomes available.
