The fifth-seeded Northampton boys tennis team knocked off No. 4 West Springfield 3-2 on the road Thursday to advance to the semifinals of the Western Massachusetts Division 1 Tournament.
Tied 2-2 in the match, Galen Winsor won five straight games at third singles to beat Earl Rice 7-5, 6-2 and clinch match point for Northampton (10-6).
“He pulled it together,” Hamp coach Brian Miller said.
Northampton will play the winner of Saturday’s 4 p.m. quarterfinal between No. 1 Longmeadow (14-2) and visiting No. 8 Amherst (8-7).
The semifinal will be Monday at 4 p.m. at the higher seed. The Blue Devils would host Amherst or visit Longmeadow.
Amherst beat Pittsfield, 3-2, in its first round match Thursday.
Aiden O’Brien beat Andrew Shvetsov 6-0, 6-2 at first singles, while Jake Duggan topped Joshua Alstede 6-2, 6-0 at second singles for Northampton’s other two points.
South Hadley 3, Turners Falls 2 — The Tigers used a pair of wins at doubles and Connor Barbacki’s second singles sweep to advance to the semifinal round of the Division 3 tournament.
South Hadley (11-8) will play the winner of Monday’s 4 p.m. quarterfinal between No. 8 Lee (9-8) and No. 1 Belchertown (18-2).
The semifinal is 4 p.m. Wednesday, either at Belchertown or at South Hadley if Lee wins.
Nate Piligian and Gavin Lipp defeated Jovanni Ruggiano and Nick Morin 6-0, 6-3 at first doubles for the Tigers.
The second doubles match ended when Will Turn and Brody Trott retired due to injury for Turners. South Hadley’s Jake Remillard and Hunter Steinbock won the match 6-5, 5-1.
Barbacki swept Ricky Craver 6-0, 6-0.
Lee 4, Frontier Regional 1 — The Frontier girls team pushed the Wildcats in their first-round matchup, but fell on the road in the Division 3 boys tournament.
Because the Red Hawks had a boy on their team, they elected to play in the boys tournament so he could play. Had he chosen not to play, Frontier would have played in the girls Division 3 tournament.
“I admire the girls’ loyalty to their teammate,” Frontier coach Steve Barrett said. “… Ian (Newman) would have stepped aside but the girls said no. ‘We got here as a team we’re going to play as a team.’ It’s not my decision. I’ve always left it up to them.”
Tori Bowen beat Christopher Petresco 6-1, 0-6, 7-5 for Frontier’s lone point.
At No. 1 singles, Frontier’s Celia Speth lost 6-3, 6-1 to Ibz Zia. At second singles, Morgan Farrick fell to Michael Comalli 6-4, 6-3.
“Even loosing they didn’t give up. They made them beat them,” Barrett said. “Second singles you look at one break of service either way and it’s a different match.”
Anna Zera and Mary Lawrence lost at first doubles, while Ashley Levasseur and Newman dropped their second doubles match.
It was the final game for seniors Bowen, Speth, Levasseur, Farrick and Newman.
It was also the final match for Barrett, who is retiring after 15 years.
“I feel we went out on a pretty good note,” he said. “I had great kids and enjoyed coaching them.”

Belchertown 4, Palmer 1 — The third-seeded Orioles (16-5) aced the No. 6 Panthers to reach the semifinals of the Division 3 tournament.
Belchertown will play the winner of Saturday’s 2:30 p.m. quarterfinal between No. 2 Monument Mountain (11-0) and No. 7 Greenfield (6-6).
Jordyn Paul beat Amanda Costa 6-2, 6-1 at first singles for Belchertown, while Emily Hamparian won at second singles, 6-4, 6-3 over Kimberly Hnynh.
The doubles teams swept for the Orioles.
Julia Morgado and Madison Slater won at first doubles, while Nicole Sterste and Emily Slater took No. 2 doubles.
Groton-Dunstable 21, Granby 6 — The Rams couldn’t match the Crusaders’ depth and firepower on the road.
They lost in the Central/West Division 2 quarterfinals after picking up the second playoff win in program history Tuesday.
“Right off the bat, Grotton’s presence alone is there,” Granby coach Sallie Gilliland said. “They have a deep, skilled program. We’re not there yet.”
Kate Sarnacki led Granby (15-7) with four goals and an assist.
Jess Patruno notched a goal and an assist, while Julia Frappier and Madison Sexton had two assists each.
Jasmine Jones found the net, and Jenna Barthlow made 10 saves.
“We did not let up,” Gilliland said.
It was the final game for Granby seniors Barthlow, Patruno and Sarnacki.
“They built an eagerness for their teammates that still have a few years left to develop their skills in the offseason,” Gilliland said. “Kate, Jess and Jenna are significant role models for our program.”
