BELCHERTOWN — A woman was assaulted while on an afternoon run Wednesday near the old railroad bed between Stadler Street and Franklin Street, police said.

At 3 p.m. Wednesday, the woman was pushed to the ground by a man who made sexually suggestive comments, according to a statement from the Belchertown Police Department. Police said she was able to run from the man and was not injured.

The suspect was described as about 65 years old, around 5 feet 10 inches tall and heavy-set, with messy gray hair and an unkempt beard. He was wearing denim shorts with a dark colored T-shirt, police say.

The incident is under investigation. Police issued a press release Thursday urging people to use caution when using the old railroad bed on Route 181, where the assault took place.

Anyone with information regarding the incident is asked to contact the Belchertown Police Department at 413-323-6685.
