Lazy afternoon in Easthampton

Paul Street, Easthampton
Photograph and text by Stan Diamond, Easthampton

My wife and I recently moved to Paul Street in Easthampton. Although we’re both now retired, during our younger years we travelled to Custer, Glacier, Yellowstone and Grand Teton national parks as well as spent a lot of time in the Adirondacks, Catskills, Maine and other northern New England states, and never once saw a single bear! So, it was quite a surprise last week to look out at our backyard — where we normally see lots of birds and small critters — to see this bear lounging very peacefully.

It was very beautiful and extremely calm (although we certainly didn’t go out back to actually meet it), eventually the bear moved on across the street, and disappeared behind another house. What a thrill for us — we love the Pioneer Valley more than ever! Created with a point-and-capture camera and a zoom lens.
