NORTHAMPTON — If you live in the city, think before you pull out the water hose. The city implemented water use restrictions as of yesterday, July 24.

The restrictions ban irrigation, car washing and washing exterior building surfaces, parking lots, driveways or sidewalks until further notice, according to a Department of Public Works statement.

Violation of the restrictions could result in a $100 fine for the first violation and a $200 fine for each additional violation.

The ban is being implemented because the stream flow of the Mill River has dropped below 26.3 cubic feet per second for the third day in the row, triggering a state mandate that water use be restricted to ensure water supply sustainability and to protect the river’s aquatic life.

The water restriction can be lifted if the water flow increases to more than 26.3 cubic feet per second for seven days in a row.

The irrigation ban applies to sprinklers or “other mechanical means,” but irrigation using a handheld hose is allowed before 9 a.m. and after 5 p.m. The car wash restriction does not apply to commercial car washes.

The washing exterior surfaces ban makes an exception for when water is needed to apply paint, preservatives, stucco, pavement or cement.
