RI mayor pushes to keep PawSox

PAWTUCKET, R.I. (AP) โ€” A Rhode Island mayor is pushing state lawmakers to approve a new ballpark for the Pawtucket Red Sox so they can stay in their current hometown.

WPRI-TV reports that Pawtucket Mayor Donald Grebienโ€™s proposal comes after the Worcester, Massachusetts, City Council voted 8-1 Tuesday to direct their city manager to try and lure the Boston Red Sox Triple-A affiliate.

Grebienโ€™s bill calls for the construction of an $83 million stadium with the team paying $45 million and taxpayers footing the rest. The taxpayer contribution would be repaid through tax revenue from the park and ticket sales.

Grebien says if the Senate Finance Committee doesnโ€™t act, Pawtucket would be โ€œseriously in jeopardyโ€ of losing the team.

The Senate Finance Chairman says the committee will hold hearings on the bill this fall.

Crew breaks Cuba to Florida record

HAVANA (AP) โ€” A team led by a California-based businessman is claiming a record for a powerboat crossing from Florida to Cuba.

The crew reports making it from Key West to Havana in 1 hour and 18 minutes.

They say they averaged nearly 80 mph and hit a top speed of 127 mph on their roughly 100-mile route across the Florida Straits.

The team was led by British-born Nigel Hook. He runs a data analytics and software engineering firm in California.

American Power Boat Association executive director Patrick Mell says there is no modern record for the route so Thursdayโ€™s run would establish a mark once it is certified by them and the International Union of Motor-boating.

The team says it is seeking recognition from Guinness World Records.

ESPN to tell history of college football

ESPN has announced a yearlong project on the history of college football, starting in January 2019, as part of the 150th anniversary of the sport.

In a release Thursday, ESPN says it will use all platforms to tell the story of college football throughout the year. The project will include 150 consecutive days of content in the fall of 2019 to coincide with the football season.

It wraps up with the College Football Playoff national championship game on Jan. 13, 2020, in New Orleans.

ESPN will be working with veteran college athletics administrator and former Big 12 Commissioner Kevin Weiberg. Heโ€™s heading an effort by college football leaders to celebrate the anniversary.
