Amherst Regional graduate Meikkel Murray announced on Twitter Wednesday night that he will attend Lee Academy to play basketball in the fall.

Lee made a strong effort to land Murray, who did not visit the school.

“I felt the love there,” Murray said.

Murray hopes to improve every aspect of his game while at the prep school located in central Maine, about an hour from the Canadian border.

“I want to get stronger,” Murray said. “Work on my stamina. Work on my jump shot and on-ball defense. Perfecting everything.”

With the improvements coming from a postgraduate year, Murray hopes to continue his athletic career into the college ranks.

“I am looking to have a good season and get college offers,” Murray said. “Either at the Division I or Division II level.

Igor Vrzina coaches Lee, which featured an international roster with only one American last season.

“I have never been around international players,” Murray said. “But it will be a new experience I am looking forward to it.”

Murray’s decision came after a senior season where he almost willed the Hurricanes to a Western Massachusetts Division 1 championship against Central.

Murray had 27 points in the 61-60 loss to the Golden Eagles.

During the season he surpassed 1,000 career points, becoming the first boys player since Bayete Gordon in 1999 to reach the milestone for the Hurricanes.
