Sleeping Porcupine

Quabbin Reservoir, Route 9, Belchertown

Photograph and text by Anne E. Ely, South Hadley

I have a habit of scanning the trees as I drive through the Quabbin Reservoir looking for birds to photograph. Lately, however, I have been seeing porcupines. Sometimes munching on leaves, sometimes sound asleep as this one was. They have a habit of changing their position just as I am ready to press the shutter. This one was no exception. Just as I was ready to click it would turn its head and face away from me. I tried moving to the other side, but then just decided to wait until it turned back toward me. Luckily, it was on a low branch so I didnโ€™t have a stiff neck looking up while waiting.

I used my tripod mounted DSLR with a medium length telephoto lens.
