GRANBY — The Frontier Regional boys cross country team remained undefeated on Tuesday.

With all five Red Hawks in the top seven, Frontier defeated Granby, 19-40, and McCann, 15-50, at Dufresne Park.

Despite Frontier’s two top runners — Alex Sharp and Carsten Carey — being out due to illness, the Red Hawks’ remaining runners stepped up to the challenge on the 3.1-mile course. Frontier freshman Peter Carey, Carsten’s brother, finished in first place with a time of 19 minutes, 23 seconds.

“I think the boys prepared really well over the summer,” Frontier coach Bob Smith said. “Carsten is a really fine runner, and his brother for as young as he is has run well too.”

Peter Carey secured his first, first-place finish of the season, with Ben Litskoski (19:25) finishing two seconds behind him.

“He’s taught me a lot, from the ins and outs of racing to strategies for training, and getting well over the summer before the season starts,” Peter Carey said of his brother.

Frontier’s Dan Dejnak (20:30) finished fourth, followed seven seconds later by Brandyn Robinson. George Baylis (20:48) came in seventh to round out the top five for the Red Hawks.

“The complexion of the team has changed over the season because of injuries or illness,” Smith said. “I do not know what it is going to look like in another month, but I’m hoping it gets back to what it was.”

Granby’s Andrew Hutchinson (19:33) finished third overall. Abe Gould (20:39) came in sixth place, followed by a ninth-place finish for Kyle Murdock (21:24). Sam Gould (10th, 21:34) and Tanner Imelio (22nd, 23:30) rounded out the top five for the Rams, who beat McCann 19-38.

Frontier pulled off an undefeated season and qualify for the state meet for the first time in 2016. This season, the Red Hawks (6-0, 3-0 Pioneer North) are hoping to remain undefeated and contend for a state championship.

“It’s been a total team effort, our one through five is really strong,” Carsten Carey said. “We’re really only looking forward to Western Mass. right now, hoping to get a win there.”

Smith had high praise for Robinson and Litskoski. Robinson bounced back from a tough race on Saturday at the MSTCA Frank Kelley Invitational.

“Brandyn ran much better today than he did in Saturday’s race, and then Litskoski ran super well too,” Smith said. “They really stepped up because we were without our number one and number two guys.”

In the girls race, Frontier beat Granby, 23-36, and McCann, 17-44. Granby beat McCann, 20-39

Fiona Ferry won the race in 24:06 for the Red Hawks.
